Selecting Foods
A variety of pre-entered food selections may examined for nutritional information and/or added to the selected meal for the selected date. These foods include generic items (e.g. bagel), brand name items (e.g. NATURAL GRAINS - cinnamon raisin bagel), specific restaurant menu choices (e.g. McDONALD’S Spanish Omelette Bagel), and recipe items from popular Diabetic cookbooks (e.g. Oat Bran Muffins from page 279 of Mabel Cavaiani’s “The New Diabetic Cookbook”). On the menubar, are menus for General Foods (generic), Brand Products, Restaurants, and Cookbooks. In addition, there is a Favorites menu, in which the patient may add his or her favorite foods to break, lunch, dinner, snack menus or copy or move foods from one of the pre-entered categories to the Favorites section. (Note that the Favorites are not customized for each patient if there are multiple users. This area is customized for the application regardless of who the current user or patient is.) The illustrations below shows the various categories under each of the menu options. Upon choosing a food category, the foods associated with that category will be displayed in the food selector area on the left hand side of the main page. The user can then browse the list and select the appropriate food item. A second way of selecting foods is to conduct a search for a particular food, brand, etc.

Each menu offers various categories of foods from which selections
may be chosen. When a category is chosen, the food items
associated with that category will be listed in the Food Selector field.
For example to choose a McDonald’s Quarter Pounder, the user
chooses the “M” category under the Restaurants menu. To look up
the nutritional value of a bowl of Kellogg’s Corn Flakes, the user chooses
the “K” category of Brand Products menu.
