Adding
New Foods to the Database New foods may be added to
the database, or specified for just the current meal (without permanently
adding the food to the database for future reference), by clicking the
“Add New Food” button. A pop-up dialog window appears (Figure 12) overlaying
the Food Selector. Nutritional information
values can be entered for a new food in each field of the dialog, specifying
a description, a serving size, a serving type (tbsp, fl.oz, etc.), calories,
fat calories, grams of fat, grams of saturated fat, milligrams of cholesterol,
milligrams of sodium, grams of carbohydrates, grams of fiber, and grams
of protein. Values must be entered in each yellow field (except the serving
type can be bypassed - by default it contains a <space> character value.)
Use the tab key to move from field to field. The fat calories field may
be skipped and have it calculated based on the value entered into the fat
field. Likewise, entering a value for the fat calories results in a calculated
value for the grams of fat (if the fat field is empty). Both calculated
values may be edited. The gray fields (grams of serving, and the percentages
of daily recommended allowances of vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium and iron)
are optional. These fields may be left blank. To permanently add the new
food to the database for future reference, place an X in the check box
in the lower left corner, choose a broad category and then a specific category
from the drop down boxes at the bottom of the dialog. Click the “Submit”
button to add the food and clear the fields.
The food database can be customized by adding new
foods to any of the food categories.
